Dick Tomey was a college football coach who had a successful career over 30 years. He was born on June 20, 1938, in Bloomington, Indiana, and attended college at DePauw University where he played as a defensive back on the football team.
Tomey began his coaching career in 1962 as an assistant coach at Davidson College. He then went on to serve as an assistant coach at several other colleges before becoming a head coach at the University of Hawaii in 1977. He had a successful tenure at Hawaii, leading the team to its first-ever bowl game in 1989.
In 1987, Tomey became the head coach at the University of Arizona, where he had the most success of his career. He led the Wildcats to six bowl games and became the winningest coach in school history. He also coached future NFL stars such as Tedy Bruschi and Rob Waldrop.
Tomey retired from coaching in 2009 with a career record of 183-145-7. He was known for his innovative defensive strategies and his ability to develop players both on and off the field.
Dick Tomey passed away on May 10, 2019, at the age of 80. He was posthumously inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2022.
